University College London

University College London (UCL) was founded in 1826 by students of the philosopher, Jeremy Bentham, as the original University of London. The first University to be founded in England after Oxford and Cambridge, UCL was the first to admit students of any race, class or religion, and the first to welcome women on equal terms with men.

There are nearly 5,000 academic staff including the largest professorial body in the country, at over 600. More than a third of the 20,000 students are involved in post-graduate study.

Today, UCL is one of the leading academic research and teaching universities in the world. In 2007 it was ranked in the top-ten global universities with 60 departments receiving top ‘5’ or ‘5*’ ratings in the last Research Assessment Exercise.
